“Passing the baton to the next generation of Canadian researchers”

“The impact of training is immeasurable. [Terry Fox funds] have supported the Strategic Training Initiative in Health Research (STIHR) Programs for many years. As one of these programs, our peer-reviewed Cancer Research Training Program (CRTP) is open to all cancer research trainees in Atlantic Canada. It includes the whole spectrum of cancer and involves trainees in basic research, clinical research and population research. It brings these trainees together to discuss what they’re doing individually, as well as what is happening in all areas of cancer research. Many of our trainees have stayed in Atlantic Canada and certainly increased the breadth and depth of cancer research within the region.

“Trainees are our future. Many of us are getting older and are starting to pass the baton on to the younger researchers. We desperately need those young researchers and we have to stimulate these young people at an early level in their training so they strongly consider cancer research as the focus of their career.”
